Sick bandwidth!

You might be wondering what kind of an Internet connection I might have? Well consider this : I worked for ISPs for the majority of my career thus speeds as close to the backbone as one can get. This is what I have at home in London.

P.S For all you that are jealous , please don’t be , the screenshot to follow is when the network is quite congested. :)

cultural difference or cultural experience?

As many might know London is a multicultural city. It’s society is built on people’s culture as it was brought by them or the generations before them. London is pure proof of how a multicultural society functions without discrimination of what ever kind. Recently I met this guy from Turkey. Now obviously back home this is something odd or something out of the ordinary. Here it felt quite natural and normal. These are my findings so far.

anything but abuse

As I was entering a tube station the other day , I walked up to a person behind the tilt. I topped up my oyster card to be able to travel and took out a 20 pound note. Out of natural courtesy I asked the guy if he takes twenty pound notes. His reply simply shocked me. He bluntly said (with a sprinkle of a humorous tone) “I’ll take anything but abuse”. This shocked me and I’m about to tell you why.

my first lecture

I originally felt I was about to blog this , then thought that it shouldn’t be any of your business but then I thought why not. This is to share my enthusiasm of what could be the very change I was looking for that gave me an optimistic view of everything. Many of you might know I’m not in Cyprus right now , I’m abroad for studies. Today was day 1 at university and it was all going pretty mediocre until I met one man that just changed everything leaving me floored and with the absence of blinking between my eyes for just over an hour.

Ubuntu and the Ralink rt73 chipset.

I’m sure that those who deal in wireless know the existence of four tear old Ralink. Ralink does some amazing chipsets with a refined version of what we should have had yesterday and not today. Never the less as I mentioned in a previous post recently , I have bought an Edimax wireless chipset. In Linux you more or less have a few ways of setting it up. One is the native drivers that come from the manufacturer and the other is through an open source project called Rt2×00 which supports quite a few of the Ralink chipsets under Linux. This includes functions such as encryption, traffic monitoring and frame injection. I got it up and running with Ubuntu in only a few moments. This article walks you through on how to get it up and running within five minutes.

I needed to get Ubuntu 8.04 running as fast as possible on my EEE PC 1000. There were quite a few options such as buying myself a USB dvd-rom drive or converting an IDE to USB drive , etc… The easiest way is to use a thumb drive / usb stick and about five minutes of your time. Here’s how.

Extending your wireless range on the go.

While moving around lately I needed something that could boost up my wireless range a little to help the neighbors offer me their wifi services a little easier. So I figured since I was in London I should shop around and pickup a few basic ingredients to make it happen for me. Here are my new geek toys that helped out on extending my wireless range without a lot of fuss.

My new sub-notebook!

Heads up , new geek toy in the house. I pre-ordered an Asus EEEPC 1000 from Amazon about a month ago and as soon as I arrived in London I found it ready for me. For those of you not aware of the EEE series , they are ultra portable notebooks from Asus that have sold pretty well. The 1000 model is the best so far with many additional features , Intel’s Atom processor and many other improvements in comparison to older models.

longing for the left seat in the skies

To those of you who know me in real life you will probably know about my obsession regarding aviation. I usually blabber about it sometimes with such enthusiasm to a point where I can bore airline pilots if I ever had the chance :) Going through endless documentaries , documents , websites , ebooks and what not I have finally reached a conclusion regarding this dream of taking the left seat in the sky as captain. Captain Spinthiras doesn’t sound too cool but if I am ever your pilot in an aircraft , you can just call me captain and it’s fine. :)
